Castello degli Acquaviva
History of the Acquaviva Castle
Erected between the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, the Acquaviva Castle in Nardò was commissioned by Giovanni Antonio Acquaviva d'Aragona. His goal was to protect the city following the Turkish invasions of 1480.
Architecture of the Castle
One of the peculiarities of the castle is the almond-shaped tower, once an effective military architecture expedient to better defend the curtain wall. The castle, built on a rectangular plan, has four large corner towers. The facade features a 19th-century rustication, a balcony rich in caryatids and splendid friezes that decorate the upper cornice.

Castello Angioino
Description of the Angioino Castle
The Angioino Castle of Mola di Bari is a fascinating example of 13th century architecture, erected by the will of Charles I of Anjou. Its polygonal wall structure, built on the remains of the original Angevin nucleus, is a work of architectural art.
Function and History of the Castle
The fortress had a dual function: it was both an aristocratic residence and a military post. The upper floor was reserved for the private apartments of the sovereign and, in the following centuries, to the various lords who succeeded each other in the government of the city, from the Toraldo to the Carafa, to the Acquaviva-D'Aragona.
Construction Technique
The wall technique with roughly squared stone blocks at the main entrance is a clear testimony of the Angevin work. This characteristic makes the Angioino Castle one of the most important historical and architectural testimonies of Mola di Bari.

The Castle of Sannicandro di Bari: a jewel of history and culture
The Castle of Sannicandro di Bari is one of the most notable tourist attractions in the region. Located in the heart of the historic center, the castle has a fascinating history that dates back to the medieval period.
Originally built by the Byzantines and Swabians, the castle served as a bulwark against Saracen invasions. Of this imposing defense building, six of the original eight fortification towers still remain.
A journey back in time
A distinctive element of the castle are its two portals, which preserve traces of its rich history. One of these still bears the marks of the holes through which the drawbridge chains passed, while the other shows the coat of arms of the Grimaldi princes, a feudal family that held the castle for a period.
The restoration of the Castle
In the 1800s, the castle was used to raise funds for the maintenance of the Basilica and Chapter of San Nicola. Only in 1900, after being purchased by the Municipality, did the castle begin to undergo restorations that allowed the building to regain its ancient splendor.

Castello Svevo di Vieste
History and Architecture of the Swabian Castle of Vieste
The Swabian Castle of Vieste is a territorial resource of immense value. Dating back to the early Middle Ages, it is mentioned as castellum quod dicitur Besti in a parchment of 1059, drawn up during the Council of Melfi.
The castle was restored and enhanced by Frederick II of Swabia in 1240, as part of a careful strategy of fortification of the Apulian coast. This area, although protected, was exposed to threats coming from the sea.
The Program of Frederick II of Swabia
Frederick II of Swabia personally coordinated the military enhancement activity through the Statutum de reparatione castrorum. This document provided for the division of the castle structures into Castrum and Rocche, intended for military purposes, and Palatium and Domus solaciorum, used as leisure residences.
The Swabian Castle of Vieste falls among the structures with a defensive function. However, its original architecture was profoundly modified in the 16th century, when the Spaniards intervened bringing significant changes. The remains of the Swabian fortification were incorporated into the new structure, which has almost completely lost the imprint of the 13th century.
