Excursion to the Bauxite Caves in the Alta Murgia Geopark - September 29th

Get ready for a unique adventure in the heart of the Alta Murgia Geopark! Together, we’ll explore the fascinating bauxite caves, set in a breathtaking natural landscape. This path will guide us through wild scenery and remnants of Puglia’s rich mining history.

A Unique Landscape

During the trek, we will cross the typical Murgian landscape, alternating between arid stretches with dry fennel plants and majestic hawks flying overhead, to ravines and coniferous forests. Along the way, we’ll discover small bauxite caves hidden in the vegetation.

Our final destination is the imposing Cava Grande di Terra Rossa, once a key part of Puglia’s mining economy for bauxite extraction. The vibrant red shades of the earth, unusual rock formations, and the contrast with the surrounding green will make you feel as if you’ve landed on another planet.

• 10:00 AM - Meet the guides and register participants
  (Exact location will be communicated upon booking via GPS)
• 10:15 AM - Start of the trekking experience
• 1:30 PM - Picnic lunch break
• 3:30 PM - Return to the cars
