Torre Carnara

The historic Carnara Tower of Oria

In the heart of the historic center of Oria, among the suggestive alleys and stairs, a historical reference point of particular importance emerges: the Carnara Tower, or Dove Tower. This round construction, incorporated in the white lime wall of the cathedral, is what remains of an ancient Messapic construction.

A piece of history incorporated into the cathedral

The Carnara Tower played an important role during the 18th century, when it was used as an ossuary of the nearby cemetery. Later, it was transformed into a supporting element of the cathedral, thus becoming an integral part of the sacred architecture of the city.

The historical narration of the Carnara Tower

According to what was reported by Domenico Albanese, local doctor and historian, in his 'Chronological History of the City of Oria' of 1678, in the 17th century there was no 'stone upon stone or apparent relics of ancient buildings'. This narration suggests that the Dove Tower may have a more recent origin, probably coeval with the pre-existing medieval cathedral, replaced by the new construction in 1700.

A Story of Resistance: the Hell Tower

The Hell Tower, located near the Swabian Castle, is an emblematic example of Renaissance military architecture. It was designed in 1484 by Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, at the request of Ferdinand of Aragon, with the aim of strengthening the city's defenses.

The Reinforcement of Charles V and the Turkish Threat

In the early decades of the 16th century, Emperor Charles V decided to further reinforce the Tower, worried about the pressing Turkish threat. This cylindrical structure, equipped with forty gun ports, became one of the nerve centers of the city's defense.

Restorations and Transformations Over the Centuries

The Hell Tower has undergone various renovations and questionable restorations over the centuries, which have changed the original appearance of the building. Among the most significant, those of the early twentieth century, when the Bastion was transformed into a guardhouse for access to the military area of the Marina.

The Tower Today

The part of the Tower overlooking via della Libertà has been remodeled to meet the changed needs of the ancient fortification. Despite the various interventions, the Hell Tower still retains its original charm and majesty, testifying with its presence the important military and defensive history of the city.

Torre Santa Sabina, Torri

History of the Santa Sabina Tower

Strategically positioned on the coast of Carovigno, the Santa Sabina Tower is a historic building of great relevance. Dating back to Roman times, this tower was originally a small port, frequented by pilgrims, travelers and merchants.

The place, however, was subject to frequent incursions by pirates and Saracens. This situation led to the construction of a watchtower to protect the area.

Reconstruction of the Tower

Unfortunately, the original tower was destroyed in a short time. However, during the sixteenth century, following major fortification works on the coast, the tower was rebuilt half a mile away from the original site.

Of the first construction there is no trace. The most recent structure, of a star type, has been used as a private residence. This tower, about eleven meters high, maintains the characteristics of a defense tower.

The Civic Tower of Biccari is a monument of great historical importance, an integral part of the territorial network of towers of the region. Its construction dates back to an unspecified period, but thanks to an ancient parchment preserved in the Cathedral of Troia, it can be hypothesized that it was built between 1116 and 1122.
